REGISTER OF MERIT POINT SYSTEM

The AWSC, Inc. Register of Merit (ROM1) system is designed to honor those AWS’s who have proven themselves to be exceptional producers of champions, hunting and working dogs.

Beginning on August 1, 2007, any dog earning points toward a ROM award for its sire or dam, must have passed and be current on the following three health clearances, before ROM points can be awarded:

  • Orthopedic Foundation for Animals - Hip and Cardiac clearance

  • Canine Eye Registration Foundation

  • Any other health clearances the AWSC may decide to add in the future to meet the CHIC requirements.

When Can "ROM" Be Used?

The letters "ROM", standing for Register of Merit, may be used after the AKC registered name of a dog or bitch when one of the following occurs:

  1. Official announcement of the ROM status appears in the pages of the AWSC, Inc. Review (club newsletter);

  2. Official notification of the ROM status has been received by the owner via a mailing from the AWSC, Inc. Statistician;

  3. Official announcement of the ROM status has been made at the AWSC, Inc. annual meeting. For annual meeting recognition, the official cutoff date of AKC titles earned is May 1 and AWSC, Inc. titles is June 1. This allows time for official publication of titles.

How Points are Earned

  1. Any AWS who completes an AKC bench championship earns one ROM point for its sire and one ROM point for its dam.

  2. Any AWS who completes an AKC non-hunting working title of record (obedience, agility, or tracking, etc.) earns one ROM point for its sire and one ROM point for its dam.

  3. Any AWS who completes an AWSC, Inc. or AKC2 hunting title of record. These are the only hunt titles that will be accepted for eligibility. The AWS earns one ROM point for its sire and one ROM point for its dam.

  4. Any AWS who completes an AKC bench championship and an AKC or AWSC, Inc. hunting title and an AKC non-hunting working title of record earns one bonus ROM point for its sire and one bonus ROM point for its dam.

  5. Any AWS, who earns a ROM title, earns one ROM point for its sire and one ROM point for its dam.

  6. Any AWS can earn a maximum of five (5) ROM points for its sire and five (5) ROM points for its dam. The only way to accomplish this is for an AWS to earn:

  • 1pt for an AKC bench championship

  • 1pt for an AKC Working title of record

  • 1pt for an AKC bench championship

  • 1pt for an AWSC, Inc. hunting title of record

  • 1pt for having both an AKC bench championship and an AWSC, Inc. hunting title and an AKC non-hunting working title of record

  • 1pt for a ROM title

How titles are counted:

For Dogs:
After the first 5 CH titlists, additional CH titlist’s will be counted as ROM points only after a total of five Working and five Hunting titlists have been credited. After the first 5 Working titlists, additional working titlist’s will be counted as ROM points only after a total of five CH’s and five Hunt titlists have been credited. After the first 5 Hunt titlists, additional Hunt titlist’s will be counted as ROM points only after a total of five CH’s and five Working titlists have been credited.

A dog earns admittance to the Register of Merit when he has been credited with twenty-one (21) points from his get of which2:

  • 5 points must be earned in each category (CH, working, and hunting)

  • the remaining points may come from bonus points or from additional titles or get earning a ROM title

  • Bonus points only add to the aggregate but not to any one category

For Bitches:
After the first 3 CH titlists, additional CH titlist’s will be counted as ROM points only after a total of three Working and three Hunting titlists have been credited. After the first 3 Working titlists, additional working titlist’s will be counted as ROM points only after a total of three CH’s and three Hunt titlists have been credited. After the first 3 Hunt titlists, additional Hunt titlist’s will be counted as ROM points only after a total of three CH’s and three Working titlists have been credited.

A bitch earns admittance to the Register of Merit when she has been credited with fifteen (15) points from her produce of which3:

  • 3 points must be earned in each category (CH, working, and hunting)

  • the remaining points may come from bonus points or from additional titles or produce earning a ROM title

  • Bonus points only add to the aggregate, but not to any one category
    Born before 1980
Dogs and bitches born before 1980 will have the same standards excluding hunt titles and bonus points. Their point system will be:

For Dogs:
A dog earns admittance to the Register of Merit when he has been credited with twelve (12) points from his get of which4:

  • 4 points must be earned in each category (CH, working)

  • the remaining points come from additional titles, they only add to the aggregate, but not to any one category

For Bitches:
A bitch earns admittance to the Register of Merit when she has been credited with eight (8) points from her produce of which:

  • 2 points must be earned in each category (CH, working)

  • the remaining points come from additional titles, they only add to the aggregate, but not to any one category

Cumulative Points
All ROM points that are earned by a dog or a bitch are cumulative. That is to say that the time frame in which the points are earned and the order in which titles were earned is immaterial. ROM points earned will continue to accumulate and will be added to a dog’s or bitch’s official ROM point total within the constraints of dogs the 5:5:5 or bitches 3:3:3 ratio limitation except for dogs or bitches born before 1980. Their constraint will be a 4:4 and 2:2 ratio respectively. (See item’s 7 & 10 above)

EXPLANATIONS AND EXAMPLES

The effect of the requirements are such that the achievement of a dog to ROM status will require a minimum of 5 CH and 5 Hunt and 5 Work titled offspring before the additional titles earned in either number of CH, Hunt, Work, ROM or Bonus points are counted.

Example: A dog has sired 13 CH, 7 HT, 4 Working, 1 Bonus, 1 ROM titlists. This dog has only 14 ROM points (and is therefore not a ROM) since only five of the CH’s and five of the Hunt titlists and four of the Working titlists are counted at this time. Note that in this example the 8 CH and 2 HT, 1 Bonus and 1 ROM titlists are not counted at this time are not "lost". When this dog gets his 5th Work titlist, he will then be eligible to have a total of 27 ROM points.

The effect of the requirements are such that the achievement of a bitch to ROM status will require a minimum of 3 CH and 3 Hunt and 3 Work titled offspring before the additional titles earned in either number of CH, Hunt, Work, ROM, or Bonus points are counted.

Example: A bitch has whelped 7 CH, 2 Hunt, 4 Working, 1 Bonus. This bitch has only 8 ROM points (and is therefore not a ROM) since only three of the CH’s and three of the Working titlists and two of the Hunt titlists are counted at this time. Note that in this example the 4 CH, 1 Work titlists and 1 bonus pt are not counted at this time are not "lost". When this bitch gets her third Hunt titlist, she will then be eligible to have a total of 15 ROM points.

1) The "ROM" title may not be used in any way until the owner has received official notification from the AWSC, Inc. Statistician that the ROM title has been earned. Any use of a phrase such as "ROM Pending" is equally unacceptable.

2) Prior to August 1, 2007, any AWS earning a NAHRA hunting title of record earned one ROM point for its sire and dam.

3) Ratio same Male [3 x 5 = 15   3 x 7 = 21]

4) Ratio same Female [3 x 3 = 9   3 x 7 = 21]

5) Ratio same Male [2 x 4 = 8   2 x 6 = 12]

6) Ratio same Female [2 x 2 = 4   2 x 4 = 8]
